MINUTES OF BOARD MEETING

HELD

August 10, 2004

 

 

 

The Board of Trustees of the Oak Hill United School Corporation met in the Administration Office on Tuesday August 10, 2004.  All Board Members were present except Mark Johnson and Scott Dubois.   Also present were Superintendent James W. Smith, Business Manager Jill Morphew, Harold King, Terry Renbarger, Mike Keaffaber, Bill Bishop, Joel Martin, Greg Perkins, Rob Martin,  Recording Secretary Norma Sweeten, Teresa Shafer, and Sheena Middlesworth.   Representing the news media were Donna Burchick of the Oak Hill Times, Todd Usher of the Peru Tribune, Jonathan Betheley of the Chronicle Tribune, and Mike Duncan of WBAT Radio.

1.         CALL TO ORDER

Mr. Toby Middlesworth, Board President, called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m.

2.         PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

 

            Mr.  Middlesworth opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

3.         MINUTES APPROVED

The minutes of the regular meeting of July 27, 2004, were approved as presented.

            Carol  Murphy moved to approve all personnel recommendations as presented. Brian Middlesworth seconded the motion, and it carried 5 ayes and 0 nays.

 

5.         CONTINUING BUSINESS

                        There was no continuing business.

6.         NEW BUSINESS

                        Three fund raising requests were presented from the Football Boosters. They included a pork chop dinner, discount cards, and tailgate dinners for home football games.   The first home football game against Eastern will be a memorial for the three Oak Hill students and the Eastern High School student who were killed in car accidents this summer.  Two requests for fund raising were made from the cheerleaders.  One is a car wash at Barry Bunker Chevrolet, and the other is hosting a cheerleading camp for 7th and 8th grade students. The motion was made by Dana Biggs to approve these fundraisers and was seconded by Kevin Pearson.  The motion passed by a 5 to 0 vote.

·        Was impressed with the virtual tour given by Toby Middleworth at the teacher induction and thanked Bill Bishop for his work.

Converse Elementary School

·        Thanked the Converse teaching staff and custodial staff for the cooperation in moving to new rooms this summer.  He also praised Kay Kwoczalla for the reading materials.

Swayzee Elementary

Terry Renbarger

·        Thanked Diana Bowland for the booklets for school.

Special Services

Bill Bishop, Director

·        Thanked all administrators, Toby Middlesworth, Mr. Smith and Sandi Rice who assisted in the new teacher induction.

Junior High

Greg Perkins

·        Thanked the twenty student council members who moved textbooks and Bill Bishop for his work.

Board Members

 

·        Thanked the administration and teachers for the work performed during this unusual summer and wished everyone good luck in the upcoming school year.

 

           

8.         CLAIMS

               

            Dana Biggs moved to pay claims # 172 through # 279, lunch and textbook claims #1-#20 and #26-#30, and lunch and textbook payroll checks #5012-#5020.   Kevin Pearson seconded the motion, and it carried 5 ayes and 0 nays.

 

9.         ANNOUNCEMENTS/REPORTS

                       

                        Mr. Smith presented an enrollment update for the following grade levels:   Kindergarten--88, grades 1through 3--291, grades 4 through 6 --323, grades 7 and 8--256, and grades 9 through 12—493.  Total enrollment is expected to be 1,451.  There are 29 cash tuition students expected.

                        Mr. Smith announced that there are two late staff vacanies that are in the process of being filled.  The first day of school for the teachers is August 11, 2004, and the first day for students is Thursday August 12, 2004.

                        The superintendent made known that the school system has three new buses;  an activities bus for 14 passengers plus the driver, a special education bus, and a 72 passenger bus.

                         September 17, 2004, is the “A Day’s Memebership”count.

                        There will be a Grant County Retired Teachers’ forum in September.

                        The pool repairs are completed, and the pool should be ready for use by August 23, 2004.

                        The cafeteria tables for the junior-senior high schools are on backorder.

                        The high school roof is finished.

                        The next board meeting is August 24, 2004.
