MINUTES OF A MEETING

HELD

FEBRUARY 12, 2003

 

 

The Board of Trustees of the Oak Hill United School Corporation met in the Library at Oak Hill High School on Wednesday, February 12, 2003. Board members present were Scott Dubois, Mark A. Johnson, Brian Middlesworth, Toby Middlesworth, Dennis Messersmith, and Kevin Pearson.  Board member Rob McClain was absent.  Also present were Superintendent James W. Smith, Business Manager Jill Morphew, Terry Renbarger, Charles Shroyer, Mike Keaffaber, Valree Kinch, Jean Shonkwiler, Joel Martin, and Recording Secretary Libby Medley.  Representing the news media was Donna Burchick of the Oak Hill Times. Also present were Roland Melton, Kent Sumpter, Jan Sumpter, Mindy Sumpter, Anna Mae Gibson, Clayton Schultz, Ruth Schultz, Beth Schultz, James Schultz, Shane Edwards, Tana George, Suzy Warnock, Tim Calloway, and Jay Berry.

1.         CALL TO ORDER

Mr. Messersmith, Board President, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

2.         PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

 

            Mr. Messersmith opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

3.                  PRESENTATION OF VETERAN’S DIPLOMA

 

Last year the Indiana General Assembly passed a law which permits honorably discharged veterans of World War I and World War II who did not receive a diploma because they joined the military before graduation to receive their diploma after completing the necessary steps.   Mr. Dennis Messersmith read a prepared statement which listed the service of Mr. Roland Melton who attended Amboy High School until the 11th grade.  He joined the United States Navy on May 29, 1943 and served until 1946.  Mr. Messersmith then presented a high school diploma to Mr. Melton.    

4.                  PRESENTATION BY OAK HILL HIGH SCHOOL

Mrs. Suzy Warnock and Mr. Tim Calloway presented a PowerPoint presentation on the School-to-Work program at Oak Hill High School.  They have 27 students in the program this year and have 40 students signed up to participate next year.  Students present resumes and attendance records, are interviewed by prospective employers, and have an opportunity to experience working conditions. 

5.         MINUTES APPROVED

The minutes of the regular meeting and executive session of January 22, 2003 were approved as presented.

6.         PERSONNEL

            Mr. Smith made the following personnel recommendations for Board

            Toby Middlesworth moved to approve all personnel recommendations as presented.  Brian Middlesworth seconded the motion and it carried 6 ayes and 0 nays.

7.         CONTINUING BUSINESS

            There was no continuing business.

8.                  NEW BUSINESS

A.        Driver Education Fees Approved

Mrs. Morphew presented past history on driver education fees and requested Board consideration to increase fees for 2003 to $355.  Brian Middlesworth moved to approve the driver’s education fees as presented. Scott Dubois seconded the motion and it carried 6 ayes and 0 nays.  (see enclosure)

            B.        Space Camp Fundraiser Approved

Mr. Smith requested Board consideration to permit student participants of Space Camp 2004 to sell cookie dough during the week of March 11 through March 18, 2003 to assist in expenditures for the trip.  Mark Johnson moved to approve the Space Camp fundraiser as presented.  Toby Middlesworth seconded the motion and it carried 6 ayes and 0 nays (see enclosure)

9.                  CELEBRATIONS

A.                 Mr. Renbarger listed the winners of the recent Spelling Bee Contest at Swayzee.  6th grade orchestra students received first place awards at contest at Eastbrook.  David Henry, Stacy Stetzel, and Julie Neargardner presented an in-service for the Grant County Reading Association and Mr. Renbarger voiced his pride in his staff’s presentations.

 

B.                 Mr. Keaffaber shared the results of Mr. Mark Roberts and the orchestra program with all participants receiving a First Place. 8th Grade students went to Indiana Wesleyan for career exploration and represented Oak Hill very well.

 

C.                 Mr. Shroyer thanked the School Board for their support in permitting the 4th grade students to go to the Shrine Circus in Fort Wayne on February 1st.  He also thanked Mr. Renbarger for setting up the writing in-service with Mark Russell.

 

D.                Ms. Shonkwiler acknowledged the student play “Running” which dealt with many forms of abuse and commended the students for a job well done.

  

E.                 Mr. Smith acknowledged the efforts of Mr. Dan Brauchler’s advanced computer applications class which made possible the replication of diplomas from Converse, Swayzee, Sweetser, and Amboy High Schools.

 

10.       CLAIMS

     

Mr. Johnson moved to approve claims #1226 through #1335, Lunch and Textbook Rental Claim Check #10643 through #10658, and Lunch Payroll Checks #4055 through #4082.  Scott seconded the motion and it carried 6 ayes and 0 nays.

11.       ANNOUNCEMENTS/REPORTS

 

Mrs. Valree Kinch presented a character education program that she hopes will be implemented by all Oak Hill buildings in the fall.  Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship are the “The Six Pillars of Character” which will be addressed, one per month.  It is hoped that there will also be community involvement and service projects.  This will be coordinated through building social workers.  Mr. Smith noted that Indiana Wesleyan is a conduit of the Lilly Foundation (CAPE) and they will assist with some of the funding.

            The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.

 

 

13.       EXECUTIVE SESSION

 

Following the regular meeting, the Board of Trustees met in Executive Session to discuss the performance of an individual employee as per I.C. 5-14-1.5-6.1 (8).
