Oak Hill teachers knew her as Laurie Klein; the literary world knows her as Laurel K. Hamilton, #1 New York Times’ best selling author.  While a student at Oak Hill, Lori aspired to be an author, winning third place in the Ball State Creative Writing Contest.  Today she has achieved status as a science fiction writer, having created a series of novels featuring a sleuth named Anita Blake who hunts vampires.  She also wrote other books plus some Star Trek novels.

In its August, 2009, issue Entertainment Weekly places her vampire creation, Jean-Claude, thirteenth out of twenty of the “all time greatest vampires.”  Unlike some of her rivals who play to the teenage audience, she writes more adult-centered works.

Early in her career, several Oak Hill teachers attended a book signing in Marion for her, during which she thanked us for encouraging her career. The Language Arts Department is proud of Laurel and pleased she is a product of Oak Hill High School.

Mrs. Jourdan (Spanish, English 9, remedial English), Mrs. Trejo (Spanish), Mr. Wright (German), Miss Torrence (English 11, English 12, publications), Mrs. Hewitt (English 9, English 11), Miss Tropf ( English 10), and Miss Sheline (English 12) are the teachers who make-up the Language Arts Department.

We are dedicated to helping students achieve proficiency in English and foreign languages.  Students can achieve success in our classes if they come prepared with books, paper, and writing utensils; listening skills; good reading and writing habits; and a desire to learn. Each of us wants our students to succeed and we will try every avenue possible to make that happen; conversely, they must be willing to work with us by doing and handing in their assignments and studying for tests and quizzes. Please feel free to contact us at our e-mail addresses or by voice mail if you have any concerns.
