Welcome back! I am excited about being back in school. I wanted to take the time to briefly discuss some of our attendance policy. Student attendance is very important; however, absences do happen. Please refer to the student handbook on pages 27-30 for the attendance policy.
· We ask that a parent/guardian calls prior to any absence. We do not accept hand written notes by parents/guardians.
· If the student goes to a doctor, please bring in a note from the doctor within 2 days. If a note is not turned in, the absence will count towards the 8-day limit a student has.
· Pre-arranged absences (family business day, college visit, job shadow, etc.) must be approved by administration at least 2 days prior to the absence. The parent/guardian can call in to the school and speak to an administrator. If it is not pre-arranged, the absence is unexcused and counts towards the 8-day limit a student has. We are looking forward to a great year! Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns.

I begin my twentieth year as a public school educator. I have learned many valuable lessons during this time but perhaps the best lesson I have learned is that is never hurts to be a better listener. I have found myself over these years becoming a better listener when it comes to the students I work with but curiously, I find it more challenging to listen to my own children. I’m not sure exactly why this is but my best guess is that is has something to do with my expectation of my own children. I expect the unreasonable…perfection.
I share this private thought with you in the hopes you will join me this year in becoming a better listener when it comes to our own children. Instead of “rushing to judgment” we should remind ourselves to listen more attentively to what they are saying. I came across a few good reminders recently to help me be better…hopefully, you will find these statements as useful as I do.
Focus on the speaker and what he/she is saying…don’t rush to judgment. Talk less…silence is golden. Don’t interrupt. Don’t offer unwanted advice…ask questions instead like, “What do you think you should do?” Don’t let your story take over…resist the impulse and tune into the speaker.
